Duc An House (19th century or earlier)
The Duc An house is located at 129 Tran Phu Street. It is a typical Hoian style shophouse with a long, narrow floor plan with a shop in front, a courtyard at center, a work space in the rear, and living quarters on the upper level. The house may have been built as early as the 17th century, but what we see today was constructed from about 1850 onward. In 1908, the house was converted into a shop selling Chinese medicine. It also served as a gathering place for early 20th century intellectuals, particularly from 1925 onward, when luminaries such as Phan Chu Trinh (an independence advocate) frequented here.
