Baksei Chamkrong Temple (947)
Baksei Chamkrong is a small pyramid temple located just to the south of Angkor Thom. It was constructed in 947 by King Harshavarman and is dedicated to Shiva. Measuring 27 meters on each side, the temple rises in 4 tiers of laterite surmounted by a single tower with an entrance facing east. The jambs on the entrance include two well-preserved inscriptions which give the precise date and time of the temple's dedication—9:40 AM on the morning of Wednesday, February 23, 948. The text also indicates that the shrine was built in honor of Shiva and his spouse Devi and to memorialize King Harshavarman I's parents. It goes on to celebrate earlier Khmer kings including Jayavarman II, the founder of the Khmer empire, along with the mythological hero Kambu whose marriage to Mera spawned the Khmer people.
The temple presently stands in isolation but it was originally surrounded by a brick wall with a stone gopuram to the east (remnants of which survive).
The term "Baksei Chamkrong" mean "a bird with sheltering wings" and is a modern name with no historical context, which is frequently the case at Angkor.

ปราสาทปักษีจำกรง (เขมร: ប្រាសាទបក្សីចាំក្រុង ปักเส็ยจำกรง) เป็นปราสาทหินขนาดเล็ก สร้างขึ้นเป็นเทวาลัย ถวายแด่พระศิวะ ปราสาทแห่งนี้เคยมีเทวรูปพระศิวะทองคำประดิษฐานอยู่ด้วย ปราสาทแห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่ด้านซ้ายของนครธมเมื่อเข้าทางประตูด้านใต้ สร้างโดยพระเจ้าหสวรรมัน เพื่ออุทิศถวายพระเจ้ายโศวรมัน ผู้เป็นพระบิดา การก่อสร้างแล้วเสร็จในรัชสมัยพระเจ้าราเชนทรวรรมันที่ 2 (ค.ศ. 944-968) นับว่าสร้างก่อนปราสาทแปรรูป
คำว่า "ปักษีจำกรง" หมายถึง ปักษีหรือนกอยู่ภายใต้ปีกที่กางออก ด้วยมีตำนานว่า พระราชาทรงพยายามจะหนีข้าศึกที่เข้ามาโจมตีพระนคร แต่พลันมีพญานกตัวมหึมา ร่อนลงมาสยายปีกคุ้มครองพระองค์เอาไว้
ปราสาทแห่งนี้นับเป็นปราสาทสมัยแรกที่สร้างด้วยวัสดุทนทาน เช่นอิฐ และศิลาแลง และมีการประดับตกแต่งด้วยหินทราย ปูนที่ฉาบผิวด้านนอกส่วนใหญ่ชำรุดเสียหายไป และลวดลายที่สลักส่วนใหญ่ก็ชำรุดไปมาก นับเป็นปราสาทแห่งแรก ๆ ที่สร้างเป็นชั้นและสร้างบนเนินเขา แล้วสร้างปรางค์ครอบไว้

Description.
This temple is one of the first temples constructed of durable material such as bricks and laterite and with decoration in sandstone. A brick enclosure originally surrounded the pyramid with a stone gopura on the east side is now almost completely disappeared. Much of the stucco on the surface of the temple has vanished. The main sandstone lintel is decorated with a fine carving of Indra standing on his three-headed elephant Airavata. Garlands emanate from either side of Indra in the style current to the monument. There is an inscription on either side of the small doorway which detail the dedication and praises the early Khmer kings from Jayavarman II onward as well as earlier legendary kings, including the ancestor of the nation, the hermit Kambu.[4]
The pyramid measures 27 metres across at the base and 15 at the summit for an overall height of 13 metres. Four stairway reach the summit at the cardinal points. The brick sanctuary tower, eight meters square on a sandstone base open to the east with the usual blind doors on the other sides.
