Phung Hung House (built late 18th century onward)

This old home is nearly adjacent to the Japanese Bridge and is next door to the Hoi An Book Shop. It was likely constructed in the early 1800s. Its distinguishing architectural feature is the double-height covered atrium, possibly an influence from Japanese design. Currently the entire home is open to visitors who purchase a ticket.

History

Phung Hung Ancient House is one of the most famous houses in ancient architecture and it is considered the cultural heritage of Hoi An. The house was built in 1780 and it is located at 4 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. The host of this house is a Vietnamese businessman who was wealthy by trading.

He named the house with expectation for the property of family business. The house is typical for the long tube house used for trading. In the prosperous period of Hoi An, this is the shop selling forestry specialties, silk and porcelains.

Architecture

The architecture of the building represents the harmonious combination between the Japanese, China and Vietnam. Corridor and balcony system is featured with Chinese style. The roof heading to four directions is popular image in Japan.

The wooden horizontal and vertical pillars bring the color of Vietnam country. Looking at the house, visitors can recognize the house is built by plain sacred materials with few motifs in purpose to make the difference.

The front roof is carved by the image of carp. The carb implies the wish for gook luck in Chinese believe, the power in Japanese culture and property in Vietnam tradition.

Sightseeing

Previously, the house used as a place to exchange and trade with commodities trading as silk, glass, pepper, salt. Now part of the house used as a workshop for small business trade.

The house also contains a lot of information about the lifestyle of the merchant class in ancient trading port of Hoi An. Phung Hung Ancient House was recognized as Historical and Cultural Heritage on the 29th June 1993.

บ้านโบราณ Phung Hung เป็นหนึ่งในบ้านที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดในสถาปัตยกรรมโบราณและถือเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมของเมืองฮอยอัน บ้านหลังนี้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อปีพ. ศ. 2323 และตั้งอยู่ที่ 4 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai เจ้าของบ้านหลังนี้เป็นนักธุรกิจชาวเวียดนามที่ร่ำรวยโดยการซื้อขาย

เขาตั้งชื่อบ้านด้วยความคาดหวังว่าจะเป็นทรัพย์สินของธุรกิจของครอบครัว บ้านเป็นแบบอย่างสำหรับบ้านท่อยาวที่ใช้สำหรับการซื้อขาย ในยุคที่เจริญรุ่งเรืองของฮอยอันนี่คือร้านขายของพิเศษป่าไม้ไหมและเครื่องลายคราม

ก่อนหน้านี้บ้านใช้เป็นที่แลกเปลี่ยนและซื้อขายสินค้าโภคภัณฑ์เช่นผ้าไหมแก้วพริกไทยเกลือ ตอนนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของบ้านที่ใช้เป็น workshop สำหรับการค้าขายทางธุรกิจขนาดเล็ก

บ้านนี้ยังมีข้อมูลมากมายเกี่ยวกับวิถีการดำเนินชีวิตของพ่อค้าในเขตเทรดดิ้งโบราณของเมืองฮอยอัน บ้านโบราณ Phung Hung ได้รับการยอมรับว่าเป็นมรดกทางประวัติศาสตร์และวัฒนธรรมเมื่อวันที่ 29 มิถุนายน 2536

Phung Hung old house - Hoi An ancient town

Phung Hung old house (address - 04 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street) was built over 100 years ago, during the prosperous development of Hoi An. The house is also one of the most beautiful form of architecture in Hoi An ancient town. The special structure has a high wooden attic and wide corridors around, showing the development of technical architecture and the interference between Asian styles at that time.

The first owner of Phung Hung old house is a Vietnamese businessman, selling forestry products such as cinnamon, pepper, salt, silk, ceramics, glass... He named the house is Phung Hung, it means the business  expectation is always thriving. Currently, the house owner is the 8th generation descendant, those continue living here and preserve this ancient house.

Phung Hung old house is a combination of the three architecture styles: Vietnam, Japan and China. In particular, balcony and door system is Chinese architecture. The roof of the nave is Japanese architecture. Grillage systems, crossbeam, spars, roof of facade and backside are Vietnam architecture.

Phung Hung old house is also a popular type of trader houses in the 19th century in urban Vietnam: tubular, wide facade, mainly wood materials. The pillars of the house are 80 ironwood columns, all placed on the flat rock to avoid contact with the ground for prolonging the life of the wood.

- The door style can be disassembled, easy to move. The roof is yin-yang tiles, with grooves, keep the house ventilated all year round. In addition, the department supports the eaves are carved ornate carp. Carp is a symbol of luck with the Chinese, power with Japanese, prosperity with Vietnamese.
