Prasat Preah Stung (late 12th, early 13th centuries)
Prasat Preah Stung stands at the west edge of the Preah Takata baray and is oriented along the same axis as the
baray (reservoir) and the city of
Preah Khan. It comprises a central cruciform tower connected to a large mandapa to the east. The two towers—and a 'library' in the southeast corner—are surrounded by a rectangular gallery with four
gopuras (gateways) facing the four directions. To the east is a substantial terrace measuring 55 x 36.6 meters that probably served as a landing stage in the manner of
Srah Srang. When the baray was full of water, the temple would have served as an impressive landmark visible from any point along the baray, and especially from the Preah Thkol temple-mountain at its center.
The temple was likely commissioned by Jayavarman VII (r. 1181-1218). The "face-tower" motif, which flourished during Jayavaraman's reign, was probably not added to this temple until the reign of his successor, Indravarman II, who was also a Buddhist (the face towers may be representations of the bodhisattva of compassion known as Avalokitesvara, or Lokesvara).
At the time of the author's visit in July 2015, the temple was undergoing restoration which included emergency repairs to shore up the south gopura and the central face-tower.
