Wat Rakhang (วัดระฆัง) (age unknown)

Wat Rakhang (also called Wat Wora Pho) is located immediately to the east of Wat Worachettaram and northeast of Wat Lokaya Sutha. Its name means "The Monastery of the Bell". No definitive evidence is available to indicate when it was constructed, but according to the Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya Phra Si Sin (who later became King Song Tham and ruled 1610-28) was formerly a high-ranking monk at this temple, suggesting that it was constructed before his reign. Specifically, the chronicles note:
"...Phra Si Sin, having been ordained as a monk at the Monastery of the Bell, received a religious appointment as Phra Phimon Tham Ananta Pricha, because he was expertly versed in the Three Holy Baskets. Being proficient in both the manuals of the Three Vedas and the manuals of royalty, he had many pupils and followers..." [Cushman & Wyatt, p. 207-208].
The chronicles go on to note that the future king met with his pupils and followers in secret, and broke out in revolt at midnight to size the 'Monastery of hte Holy and Glorious Great Jeweled Relic' and entered the imperial palace of Ayutthaya via the Gate of Good Fortune. The future king took the current king, Si Sawaphak (r. 1610-11) under guard and had him brought to the Monastery of the Knoll of the Phraya (Wat Khok Phraya, north of Ayutthaya), where he was executed by a sandalwood cudgel in the presence of 100 monks who performed the 'Rite of Unveiling the Corpse' in order to avoid ill merit accruing to the future king. Curiously, this incident also happened to be recorded by Van Vliet, a dutch trader in Siam at the time, who noted that the former king was beaten in the chest with a sandalwood club, whereupon his corpse was wrapped in cloth and thrown unceremoniously down a well so that his body could decompose.
The major item of interest on the site is the base of a ruined prang which is built with heavily redented corners (12 redentions per side) and four staircases leading to the top. Because the base is symmetrical, the rendentions act as a sort of sundial with a beautiful interplay of light and shadow as the sun moves across the sky. Two sermon halls (viharns) are located north and south of the prang, with the remains of several small chedi also on site.

Location

The approximate location of the site is 14.357380' N, 100.554405' E (WGS 84 map datum).
