Confucian Temple (19th century or earlier)
Hoi An's Confucian temple is located at the intersection of Trần Hưng Đạo and L? Qu? Đ?n streets at the northwest edge of the old city. Guidebooks and architectural treatises on Hoi An make scant reference to this temple, possibly because it is on the relative outskirts of the city. One source, the "Ancient Town of Hoi An" suggests that it was built in the mid-19th century with an ornamental transverse signboard added at that time, with renovations taking place in 1911 with the addition of a hall of ceremonies. The same source notes that the first temple of Confucius in Hoi An was built as early as the 18th century by local academics to mark their scholastic achievements.
The layout of the temple is loosely based on the Văn Miếu Temple of Literature in Hanoi. At the front part of the temple (toward the southeast) is a rectangular pond reminiscent of the "Well of Celestial Clarity" at Văn Miếu. Behind this, to the northwest, is the House of Ceremonies which is physically attached to the sanctuary of Confucius just behind it. At the rear of the compound is a U-shaped courtyard containing dormitories and lecture halls for the students who once studied here, in the manner of the "College for the Sons of the Homeland" (Quoc Tu Giam) which was part of the Văn Miếu Temple in Hanoi.
Currently the rear courtyard is used as a workshop for the 'Smile House', which employs people with disabilities who make handicrafts to sell.

Spirit Screen at Miếu Thời Khổng Tử, the Confucian Temple inHoi An, Vietnam. The temple has a vague history and its exact foundation date is a matter of debate. While these buildings date from the mid-19th century, and were renovated in 1911, a temple may have been built by locals in the 18th century. Regardless, this is a much under-visited and monumental temple.

A Confucian Temple in Vietnam is called Văn Miếu. The earliest recorded Confucian Temple in Vietnam is the Temple of Literature or Van Mieu in Hanoi, established in 1070. After 1397, with the construction of schools throughout Vietnam under the Tran, Confucian temples began to spread throughout the country. Well known Confucian temples were built in Hue, Hoi An, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, and Bac Ninh.
