Japanese Bridge (built early 17th century)

No one is quite sure of the exact age of this bridge, but it was probably constructed in the early years of the Edo Shogunate (the early 17th century).The covered bridge, also known as the Pagoda Bridge (Chua Cau), was built by Japanese craftsmen who were part of a larger community of Japanese merchants active in Hoi-An.

Japanese settled in this town in large numbers following a treaty with local Nguyen lords signed in the early 1600s.Hoi-an at that time was underdeveloped, but the Japanese envisioned transforming the town into a great trading center.The Nguyen Lords allowed the Japanese to construct streets, pagodas, and other infrastructure, along with housing for the merchants.The bridge is one of a handful of architectural treasures still extant from that era.

The bridge doubles as a temple, with shrines to several deities located inside. One theory of the bridge's religious purpose is that it was built to subdue a world-spanning 'mamazu' dragon monster, whose head was located in India and its tail in Japan. The movement of the tail was believed to cause earthquakes in Japan. As Vietnam was located in the area of the mamazu's back, the bridge was intended to pin the mamazu down, thus preventing any earthquakes.

สะพานญี่ปุ่น

สะพานญี่ปุ่นคือหนึ่งในสถาปัตยกรรมแห่งศตวรรษที่ 17 ที่มีความโดดเด่น ทั้งยังเป็นสถานที่สำคัญของฮอยอันและเป็นหนึ่งในสะพานที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดในเวียดนาม

สะพานญี่ปุ่นเป็นหนึ่งในสิ่งก่อสร้างที่โดดเด่นที่สุดในเมืองและมีชื่อเสียงด้านสถาปัตยกรรมโบราณ

สะพานแห่งนี้มีเจดีย์อยู่ด้านบน เดิมสร้างขึ้นโดยชุมชนชาวญี่ปุ่นที่อาศัยอยู่ในเมืองฮอยอันช่วงต้นทศวรรษที่ 1600 เพื่อให้ชาวญี่ปุ่นได้ทำการค้ากับพ่อค้าชาวจีนที่อาศัยอยู่บนฝั่งทิศตะวันออกของคลองได้ สะพานญี่ปุ่นเป็น "สัญลักษณ์ของสันติภาพและมิตรภาพ" หรือ "สะพานแห่งมิตรไมตรี" ทั้งยังใช้งานได้จริง ปัจจุบัน สะพานแห่งนี้เป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวและจุดถ่ายรูปที่สำคัญ

สะพานญี่ปุ่นทอดข้ามลำคลองสายแคบๆ และเชื่อมถนน Nguyen Thi Minh Khai และถนน Tran Phu เข้าด้วยกัน ถึงแม้ว่าจะได้รับการบูรณะหลายต่อหลายครั้งแต่ก็ยังคงรักษาเอกลักษณ์และสไตล์แบบญี่ปุ่นเอาไว้ได้ ป้ายบนสะพานจารึกชื่อของช่างทุกคนที่ร่วมกันบูรณะสะพาน แต่ไม่มีใครทราบว่า สถาปนิกคนแรกที่ออกแบบสะพานแห่งนื้คือใคร

This beautiful little bridge is emblematic of Hoi An. A bridge was first constructed here in the 1590s by the Japanese community in order to link them with the Chinese quarters across the stream.

The entrances to the bridge are guarded by weathered statues: a pair of monkeys on one side, a pair of dogs on the other. According to one story, many of Japan’s emperors were born in the years of the dog and monkey. Another tale says that construction of the bridge started in the year of the monkey and was finished in the year of the dog. The stelae, listing all Vietnamese and Chinese contributors to a subsequent restoration of the bridge, are written in chu nho (Chinese characters) – the nom script had not yet become popular.

Japanese Covered Bridge - Hoi An ancient town

Japanese Covered Bridge is seen as a symbol of Hoi An ancient town, also known as Bridge Pagoda or Chua Cau or Lai Vien Kieu. This pagoda is located on the bridge about 18 meters long, curved squeezed through a small creek flowing into Thu Bon River, connect Tran Phu street with Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street.

History of Japanese Covered Bridge

- The bridge was built around the 17th century by the Japanese businessmen, but according to Vietnam architecture.

- Later, Japanese Covered Bridge underwent several restorations, and change shape. Appearance today is formed from restorations in the 18th century and 19. The decorative scheme of porcelain plate or porcelain glaze is characteristic expressions of Nguyen Dynasty architecture.

Architecture of Japanese Covered Bridge

Pagodas and bridge are carved meticulously wooden, and the facade turned toward the river. From the outside, Japanese Covered Bridge has a curved roof, supported by a system of structural wood, and the foundation is arch pillar stone. Bridge deck is Curved, the walkway is paver wooden, the two sides have small wooden pedestal.

Pagoda part separated from the bridge by a layer of wooden walls and doors. The roof is yin-yang tiles and covering the bridge.
