St. Joseph's Cathedral (1685 onward)
The reign of King Narai the Great (r. 1656-88) marked the highpoint of the Ayutthayan kingdom's relations with Europe. During this period of cultural interchange the French found an opportunity to gain a toehold for Catholicism in the country. Already having impressed the King with their technical skills, the French petitioned the king to allow them to build a place of worship. Narai granted their request, giving the French a plot of land on the south bank of the Chao Phraya river, about midway between Wat Phutthaisawan and Wat Chai Watthanaram (a later temple built by the King's son).
Instrumental in the cathedral's founding was Bishop Pierre Lambert de la Motte, the Vicaire Apostolique of Cochinchina, who first set foot in Ayutthaya in August 1662. The bishop built a temporary wooden church at the site in 1666, followed by a more substantial brick and mortar structure in 1685 built in European style with the help of Jesuit architects. However, progress on the cathedral was slow and it was only in the reign of Petracha, the subsequent ruler, that the cathedral was completed in 1695.
The second incarnation of the cathedral only survived about 80 years, as it was converted into a shelter and base from which the Ayutthayan armies fought the Burmese invaders approaching the city in 1767. Ten days before the fall of Ayutthaya, on March 23 1767, the church was burned to the ground by the invading army.
The church lay in ruins until the mid 19th century, when Catholic authorities in Thailand began to recognize the importance of the site not only as the first Catholic church in Ayutthaya, but also as the place of rest for 30 catholic missionaries and 8 "Vicaires Apostoliques" from the prior century. During the rule of King Rama IV, Mgr. Jean Baptist Pallegoix, the Vicaire Apostolique of Siam (1841-62), rebuilt the church in 1847 and incorporated the front and side of the former church into the new structure.
Even after the reconstruction was completed the cathedral was not in the best possible condition. Another round of rebuilding began in 1883, this time under the direction of the Italian architect M. Joachim Grassi. It was not until 8 years later, in 1891, that the new cathedral was fully completed. The building was blessed and rededicated to St. Joseph by Mgr. Jean Louis Vey on April 17th, 1891.
A final round of reconstruction took place in 2003, when the building was fully renovated under the leadership of His Eminence Michael Michai Kitbunchu. The rededication to St. Joseph took place on March 20th, 2004.

วัดนักบุญยอแซฟ อยุธยา (อังกฤษ: Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Ayutthaya) เป็นโบสถ์คริสต์นิกายโรมันคาทอลิกแห่งแรกในประเทศไทย ตั้งอยู่ริมแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ตำบลสำเภาล่ม อำเภอพระนครศรีอยุธยา จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา สร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา โดยอาคารหลังแรกเป็นอาคารไม้ สร้างเมื่อวันที่ 25 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2228 (ค.ศ. 1685)[1] และได้ปรับปรุง บูรณะเรื่อยมาจนกระทั่งเป็นหลังปัจจุบัน คือ หลังที่ 4 ในปี พ.ศ. 2426 โดยมีคุณพ่อแปร์โร อธิการโบสถ์ในขณะนั้น และโจอาคิม แกรซี สถาปนิกชาวอิตาลีร่วมกันออกแบบ ตัวโบสถ์เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมฟื้นฟูโรมาเนสก์ มีหอระฆัง 1 หอ ซึ่งคล้ายคลึงกับรูปแบบโบสถ์คาทอลิกไทยทั่ว ๆ ไป เช่น วัดซางตาครู้ส วัดคอนเซ็ปชัญ ฯลฯ
วัดนักบุญยอแซฟ ถือเป็นศูนย์กลางของคริสตชนชาวสยามในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา มีประวัติมาตั้งแต่ในรัชสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช เมื่อปีแยร์ ล็องแบร์ เดอ ลา ม็อต กับบาทหลวงอีก 2 องค์ ได้เข้ามาทูลขอสร้างโบสถ์คริสต์และโรงเรียน สมเด็จพระนารายณ์จึงทรงพระราชทานที่ดินแปลงหนึ่งให้ ซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักกันในสมัยนั้นว่า “ค่ายนักบุญยอแซฟ”[4] จนถึงการเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยาครั้งที่สอง โบสถ์ได้ถูกเผาทำลายและถูกปล้นสะดมทรัพย์สินไปหมด บาทหลวงฌ็อง-บาติสต์ ปาลกัว จึงได้กลับมาบูรณะวัดอีกครั้ง ในปี พ.ศ. 2374 และโบสถ์หลังปัจจุบันคือในสมัยคุณพ่อแปร์โร ที่ได้ทำพิธีเสกในวันที่ 21 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2426 โบสถ์ได้ทำการบูรณะครั้งใหญ่ในปี พ.ศ. 2547[5] ปัจจุบันตัวโบสถ์หลังปัจจุบันนี้มีอายุแล้วกว่า 133 ปี
วัดนักบุญยอแซฟ ได้รับรางวัลอนุรักษ์ศิลปสถาปัตยกรรมดีเด่น ในปี พ.ศ. 2548 จากสมาคมสถาปนิกสยามในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์

St. Joseph’s Church was built during the reign of King Narai in 1666 as a result of a request from the missionaries headed by Bishop Lambert de la Motte a missionary who wished to build a church and a mission school. The original wooden church was rebuilt in bricks and mortar in the European style between 1685 and 1695. During the second Burmese attack, the Siamese used the church as a shelter which led to its being destroyed on 23 March 1767.
In 1831 Father Pallegoix came to Siam and took care of the restoration work on the church. The restoration was completed in 1847. More additions in the 12th century Romanesque style were made during the tenure of Father Perros during the reign of King Rama V. The church is a place of continuous Catholic worship in Thailand for over 300 years.
